Last night VH1 extended an invitation to all the Divas in the land to join them at NYC’s Hammerstein Ballroom for their Celebration of Soul, which put a highlight on the cities that have brought forth the best music in the genre, Philadelphia, Detroit, Memphis, Chicago and London.
Hopefully, you watched the red carpet arrivals here at The Queen’s Castle. The red carpet brought a few surprises and so did the actual show, you can watch here.
50 Cent was Chaka Khan’s date, he called to ask if he could accompany the living legend to the show. On the carpet, he said, “You see me, I’m standing next to the fire,” and revealed they are working together on music and movie projects.
The show was full of surprise collaborations…
VH1 paired Florence Welch and Mavis Staples for the show, as well as collaborative performances from Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson; and Chaka Khan, Mavis Staples and Erykah Badu hit the stage together.
VH1 also took a moment to pay tribute to the late Amy Winehouse, Welch, Wanda Jackson, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings were a part of the performance.
The Roots were the house band for the evening, and Questlove said, “With Amy it hurts me bad that she’s not here. I got to talk to her slightly over 24 hours before she passed. We were supposed to hang and work on stuff, but I think it’s very fitting tonight [that] we’re giving a really talented soul her just do.”
VH1 Divas airs tonight at 9pm/8pm central and includes performances from Jill Scott, Boyz II Men, Marsha Ambrosius, Estelle, Travie McCoy and others!
