Amber Bullock Kirk Franklin LeAndria Johnson

Central City Productions, Inc. presented the 27th Annual Stellar Awards on Saturday, January 14 at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. The premiere event, which honors and recognizes the achievements of gospel artists, was hosted by Marvin Sapp and Dorinda Clark-Cole.

In addition to the awards that were presented to the most prominent names in the genre, special honors were bestowed upon John P. Kee (Allstate James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award), Vy Higginsen (Thomas Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award) and Dorothy Norwood (Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones Legend Award) with tributes from Isaac Carree, Zacardi Cortez, Lowell Pye and Sheila Lakion.

The Stellar Awards will air in syndication from January 21 to February 26, 2012 and features performances from Kirk Franklin, James Fortune and FIYA, Earnest Pugh, Le’Andria Johnson, Fred Hammond, Kim Burrell, Martha Munizzi, Jessica Reedy, Richard Smallwood and Vision, Ricky Dilliard and New G, William McDowell, as well as a holy hip-hop segment with the “Three Kings” of gospel rap, Da’ T.R.U.T.H., Canton Jones and Lecrae.

Top award winners of the evening were VaShawn Mitchell and Kirk Franklin who also led in nominations along with Mary Mary. Tina Campbell attended the Awards to represent for the group as her sister, Erica, is resting in expectation of a new arrival from the stork. The group took home Stellars for Contemporary Group/Duo of the Year and Group Duo of the Year.

For his work on Triumphant, Mitchell took home six Stellar Awards for AT&T Artist of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Contemporary Male of the Year, Urban Inspirational Performance of the Year, Music Video of the Year, as well as Praise and Worship CD of the Year. Kirk Franklin’s Hello Fear grabbed four Stellars for Song of the Year (I Smile), CD of the Year, Producer of the Year and Contemporary CD of the Year.

Pastor Kim Burrell, who was also honored as Urban Soul Cafe’s Artist of the Year, won the Albertina Walker Female Vocalist of the Year and Contemporary Female of the Year for her 2011 effort The Love Album.

The show included several highlights, in addition to Y’anna Crawley taking home the Stellar for New Artist of the Year, and the Franklin’s telling the press room how they keep their marriage spicy, when the show airs look out for awesome performances from Ricky Dillard and New G.

As with many award shows, fashion is an integral part of the night and The Queen’s Castle’s “Officially Crowned Fashion’s Finest” of the evening include new names as well as a few artist that were recognized last year.  Two of my favorite stylists, Carlton Spence and J. Bolin were spotted at many industry events and were responsible for the looks of a few attendees that turned heads.

This year’s “Officially Crowned Fashion’s Finest” are Kim Fields, Jessica Reedy, Y’anna Crawley, Tammy and Kirk Franklin, Tina Campbell, Earnest Pugh, Ricky Dillard and for the second year in a row VaShawn Mitchell makes the list! Vy Higginson’s daughter, Knoelle, who escorted her mom on the carpet and wore a beautiful black gown with a haute pair of red bottoms that slayed, receives honorable mention!

The 27th Annual Stellar Awards will broadcast on the Gospel Music Channel (GMC) on Saturday, February 11 at 8pm/7pm CST. Check out more photos from the Stellar Awards, the full list of winners and national syndication information below.
